Great idea, but I'd like to see you make that top board 10 inches or so longer which seems less likely to roll back off the top if for whatever reason allowed the car to shift back a couple inches.

I wonder if the hinge is really necessary? Two beefier hinges would give complete removal of the second half and allow for uneven surfaces.

You could make them lighter by drilling some holes in them, I think you could loose 25% of the weight without compromising much strength.

Great work and I'm getting tools to do this DIY in my new home, Thailand. The Holy Grail of home-built camera holding systems would be to somehow add shock absorbers. You are getting vibrations on your footage because all vehicles... cars, morotcycles, scooters, and bicycles vibrate as they hit bumps in the road. There are small shock absorbers made for RC cars and there are rubber-band type nests made for holding microphones. I wish I could figure out hown to integrate them in camera holders. I'm building a prototype that has a vertical pcv pipe with a monopod inside and the monopod is sitting on a tall foam pad placed at the bottom of the pvc pipe. My idea is a little crude, but it does partially reduce vibration to the camera.

I would make the forward part of the ramps a little longer to allow double the thickness of the end stop. You made the point that the car can easily climb 1.5" of wood and so a thicker end stop would be safer. If you made the boards a bit wider, the centre of each forward part could contain a bottle jack with a 1/4 inch steel plate welded to the top of the ram and resting on the wood. Operating the bottle jacks would then give another 6" of lift. The area around where the operating handle would fit, would need to be braced with a 1/8" steel plate with central hole.

That is brilliant! I think I will make the part where car actually stands on longer, and add another small piece keeping the car from rolling back.
